Following Kerry’s defeat to Galway at the weekend, they are now on the brink of exiting the Super 8’s. Now needing a victory over Monaghan this Sunday, former Kerry footballer Sean O’Sullivan spoke to OTBAM about the situation now facing Kerry.
“Kerry are in trouble, there’s no doubt about it. They would have been going up to Dublin yesterday expected to come out of there with the win. It’s been well documented that Kerry weren’t really tested going up to Dublin.
“You could tell early on that Kerry just weren’t at it. Now Galway weren’t at it either, that’s the most disappointing thing from a Kerry point of view. As the game went on Galway got better, and were the better team and deserved the win. You could tell early on that Kerry hadn’t got out the blocks. They’ve left themselves now with a lot to do”.
Eoin Sheahan asked O’Sullivan if Kerry are going backwards following this defeat. Here is what he had to say:
“I don’t think they’re going backwards. I think they’re in that difficult position where they’re looking to the future and trying to get these young players into his championship team. That’s going to take time. They’ve failed their first test.
“Backwards? No I wouldn’t agree with that. For me it lacked leadership and creativity. And one thing it lacked which I was really surprised about was pace and speed. I’m not just talking about our legs but in our heads.
“Our three most dangerous forwards were all in the one small area of the field passing the ball back and forth to each other. That summed up to me Kerry’s performance. It didn’t happen enough for us.
“Our defensive set up still worries me. We lack that stopper. If that was a Dublin or a Tyrone , Kerry would have been well out of site. It’s disappointing we’re probably not where we’re at. I feel we’ll get a reaction up in Clonas next Sunday”.
