It was a topsy turvy game but in the end Liverpool managed to edge out Paris Saint Germain 3-2 at Anfield in their UEFA Champions League group opener.

Having seen a 2-0 lead evaporate against PSG, they needed Roberto Firmino, who had not recovered from an eye injury sustained against Tottenham at the weekend, to come on and fire home the late winner.

Former Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham was watching on during the Football Show and described it as a "brilliant victory from Liverpool".

"It looked as if they'd shot themselves in the foot and had the opportunity to put the game to bed but didn't take the [chances]," he said.

"But credit to Liverpool, they kept pushing and James Milner in particular. It looked as though PSG were going to break up the pitch."

Kenny also pointed out that Firmino's finish was impressive in the circumstances, given where he had to find the target from.

"He had a huge amount to do. Glancing at the TV screen, you weren't thinking goal here. He's done fantastically well, just kind of feinted to shoot off his left hand side, checked onto his right and then just arrowed the ball into the far corner," he said.

Meanwhile, Tottenham lost 2-1 at the San Siro against Inter Milan despite leading and Harry Kane's form has come under further scrutiny with the England striker not firing on all cylinders thus far this season.

Martin Lipton of The Sun joined us on the Football Show and he feels Kane is still struggling to return to peak form from an injury picked up back in March before his World Cup showing when he ended up winning the golden boot.

"I think he could do with a couple of weeks off certainly," he said.
