When Eric Dier stepped up to take the fifth penalty for England against Colombia in Tuesday night's World Cup last-16 clash, you'd have been forgiven for thinking that something was about to go wrong.

But the versatile Tottenham player made no mistake and fired in the penalty that sends England to a quarter final clash against Sweden and tantalisingly closer to a first World Cup final since 1966.

It was the first shootout win for the Three Lions since Euro 96 and also their very first of that kind in a World Cup encounter after painful losses to Argentina, Portugal and Germany in previous tournaments.

Keith Andrews was on hand on the Football Show just as Dier scored the clincher after normal time and extra time had finished 1-1 between England and Colombia.

He said: "That would have been a massive opportunity missed. If they hadn't maneuvered past Colombia with what's lying ahead, Sweden, they would have been kicking themselves for years because there's a World Cup up for grabs," he said.

"They should have put this game to bed in the 90 minutes and they certainly rode their luck at times in extra time.

"But over 90 minutes, I thought they were the better team by a mile without playing anywhere near what they're capable of."

And on Dier's penalty moment, he added: "He's another one that gets a lot of criticism but... he's going to be a hero on every back page tomorrow morning."
