Joe Ward made history in Hamburg on Tuesday night by guaranteeing a third medal on the world stage.

The light-heavyweight has become the first Irish boxer to secure three World Elite Championship medals.

The 23-year-old claimed silver in 2015 and also claimed a bronze in 2013. Having guaranteed he’ll leave Germany with at least a bronze he becomes first ever Irish male fighter to reach a tally of three medals.

Ward was a unanimous victor in his quarter final with Mikhail Daugaliavets of Belarus to seal at least a bronze.

Ward entered the tournament as third seed, he will now box second seed Bektemir Melikuziev in the semi-final on Friday.

Having won bronze in 2013 and silver in 2015, the Westmeath native will be gunning to go one better and bring home a gold from this tournament.
