Everton have delivered a positive update on Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy, with the club saying they’re hopeful the midfielder could be back in action for the start of next season.

McCarthy suffered a horror double leg-break in Everton’s meeting with West Brom in January, and has spent the last six weeks recovering from surgery at home.

However, he is to link back up with his Everton teammates this week to begin his rehabilitation, and manager Sam Allardyce says the early signs are positive for the 27-year-old.

“It is down to the specialist and them saying if and when James can start moving forward,” Allardyce told Everton’s club website.

Allardyce added that if things go according to plan, he could return to training in July, just six months on from his injury.

“The specialist will guide us on how far we can go and with a bit of luck we can look forward to James starting the next pre-season with us.

“He has had some time back at home. He will probably rejoin us in the next few days on a regular basis to start getting some mobility into his ankle, particularly because it has been in a set position for such a long time."

In contract, his Everton and international teammate Seamus Coleman was sidelined for 10 months with a similar double leg-break, returning just before McCarthy suffered his own injury.
