Ireland midfielder Jayson Molumby swaps Brighton for Preston

Republic of Ireland midfielder Jayson Molumby has joined Preston North End.

The 21-year old has left Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion on loan until the end of the current season.

Molumby's no stranger to the Championship having spent last season on loan at Millwall, almost helping them to a place in the playoffs.

He's managed just one appearance for his parent club in the Premier League this term, coming on as a final minute substitute in November's 2-1 win away to Aston Villa.

"I spoke to the gaffer [Alex Neil] and the Irish boys here, who I know quite well, and it was a no brainer in the end and I am looking forward to getting started," Molumby told the Preston website.

"Seani [Maguire] and Alan [Browne] speak very highly of the club and then the gaffer spoke to me and was the same and, in the end, I just wanted to get it done and I am really excited to get going and I just want to play some games and help the team."

Preston are currently 12th in the Championship table, but just five points off the playoff places.

Millwall had been interested in having Molumby return to The Den on a permanent basis, and had a club record bid rejected by Brighton.

The Seagulls appear keen to keep hold of the five-time capped Ireland midfielder.

He's played in four of the last five games under Stephen Kenny.

His new boss Alex Neil said, "I think this is a signal of intent from us and he is a great acquisition. He has great energy, is good on the ball and is an Irish international.

“He has played at this level before for Millwall and he knows what it is about and we are delighted to get it across the line.”
