Glenn Whelan has signed a new contract at Fleetwood Town.
It'll keep the veteran Republic of Ireland midfielder at the League One side until the summer of 2021, with an agreement reached following a week of talks with the player.
"Fleetwood Town are delighted to announce Glenn Whelan has signed a contract extension", the club confirmed this afternoon.
"The 36-year-old was an ever-present in Joey Barton’s side after joining in January 2020 and was vital in the side’s 11-match unbeaten streak at the end of the season.
"After leading Joey Barton’s men to the play-offs the 36-year-old has now agreed a new deal at the club which will see him contracted until the summer of 2021."
“I’m delighted to have Glenn for another season," Fleetwood boss Joey Barton said of the 36-year-old's decision to extend his contract.
"The impact he made in the second half of the season was superb. He’s a player who has high standards on and off the pitch and you can’t have enough of those players around the club.
"I think people saw how important he was in us reaching the play-offs last season."
Whelan made 13 appearances for Fleetwood since joining from Hearts this Spring, they lost out to eventual winners Wycombe in the playoff semi-finals.
