Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini offered a damning assessment of Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to hold onto the lead in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

The veteran Italian claimed that Tottenham have a history of failing to score when the pressure is on.

The Italians came from behind to win 2-1 in the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie at Wembley for a 4-3 aggregate win.

Chiellini comments are likely to add insult to injury to a Spurs side that were already heartbroken to have squandered a lead:

"It's the history of Tottenham. They always created many chances to score so much, but at the end they miss always something to arrive at the end.

"We believe in the history," he added.

"We saw it yesterday between Paris [Saint-Germain] and Real [Madrid], the history is important, with experience it is important, and tonight we use our skill and arrive at the win.

"We have improved year by year and match by match and we improve with many players. It is very difficult but we are here."

"We knew Spurs were weak in defence and were mentally fragile," he told ITV.

"They always miss something to get to the end.

"It's the history of Tottenham. They always created many chances to score so much, but at the end they miss always something to arrive at the end.

“In less than three minutes we conceded two goals – two big mistakes – and that is why we are out,” he told BT Sport.

“In both legs we deserved more. I feel proud. We played fantastic football until that first goal and we dominated.

“Of course we are very disappointed but it is part of growing. We will keep going. But we are very disappointed.

“We created a lot of chances. It is clear that we deserved a lot more. In football it is not about deserving, you have to score goals and not concede".
