Ger Brennan has retired from inter-county football.

He has confirmed the news today, having played with the Boys in Blue since 2007.

"It is with both satisfaction and sadness that I announce my retirement from inter-county football", said Brennan in a statement.

"I am sufficiently satisfied that I have fulfilled my boyhood dreams to wear the Dublin senior football team jersey and to achieve success on and off the field of play."

“I also feel sadness that a particular journey of my life is coming to a close, and I will miss everything that is associated with representing my county.”

"While the public might measure a team's success by the trophies raised, I feel I have won far more through the life-long bonds and friendships I have developed with so many players and management throughout my career; and for these I am truly grateful.

The two-time All-Ireland winning defender hasn’t played for Dublin since the 2013 All-Ireland final.

He’s been struggling with an Achilles heel problem since then- an injury which saw him opt out of this season's Dublin panel earlier this year.

Dublin manager Jim Gavin has paid tribute to the defender, describing him as "an outstanding leader both on and off the field of play".

"On behalf of the Dublin Gaelic Athletic Association and the Dublin Senior Football Team I would like to wish Ger Brennan the very best wishes as he announces his retirement from inter-county football", said Gavin's statement.

"Ger inspired those around him by his actions of self-determination, self-sacrifice and dedication to his sport – all focused on the team being the best it could be."

As well as his two All-Ireland medals, won in 2011 and 2013, Brennan also won 5 Leinster medals and a National League title.

He also won the All-Ireland club title with St. Vincents in 2014.

Brennan will continue to play for the Marino club.

Gavin finished his statement describing Brennan as "an exemplary individual and gentleman", noting "Ger’s humility, poise and grace are a credit to his family, friends and club St Vincents".
