Former Arsenal footballer Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a car accident, aged 35.

His home town club Sevilla confirmed the news with a statement on Twitter this lunchtime, saying they 'couldn't be confirming worse news'.

"We couldn't be confirming worse news. Beloved Sevilla star Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision. Rest in peace."

Reyes won 21 senior caps for Spain and was part of the Arsenal squad which became known as the 'invincibles' for going the whole Premier League season unbeaten in 2003-2004.

Having signed for the Gunners as a teenager for 20-million Euro, he became just the second player to be sent off in an FA Cup Final when he saw red in the Gunners' win over Manchester United in the 2005 decider.

He also featured for Real Madrid, where he won La Liga in 2007, Atletico Madrid and Benfica across his career and had been playing in the Spanish second-flight with Extremadura.

He won the Europa League on five occasions, twice with Atletico and three times with Sevilla.

Reyes' former Arsenal teammates Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas have been paying tribute.
