The FAI have given Roy Keane their full backing.

The Irish assistant manager was reportedly involved in an altercation with a member of the public yesterday afternoon.

The incident took place at the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links, where the Irish squad are staying, ahead of their Euro qualifier against Scotland tomorrow night.

Gardai and an ambulance were called to the scene, and a man was taken to hospital.

However, it's believed no punches were thrown, and that there are several witnesses.

Reports in today’s Irish Independent say Keane and the man “have history”.

The FAI released a statement last night backing the assistant manager.

“We wish to clarify that Roy Keane called the Gardai following the incident”, said the statement.

“The manager, Martin O'Neill and the FAI are fully aware of the circumstances surrounding this event, and the Assistant Manager has their full support.”
