Merseyside Police have launched an investigation after a red flare was set off on the statue of Everton legend Dixie Dean outside Goodison Park.

Everton released a statement to say that the club were assisting police and that no damage had been done to the statue of the club's all time leading goalscorer.

A statement read: "Everton is assisting Merseyside Police with enquiries in relation to a flare ignited on the Dixie Dean statue outside Goodison Park.

"We encourage anyone with information relating to this disappointing and disrespectful incident to contact Merseyside Police.

"Following inspection - and cleaning of the memorial and the site - we can thankfully confirm no permanent damage has been done to the statue of our greatest-ever goalscorer - or the floral tributes laid at the foot of the statue."

A statue of Dixie Dean has been outside Goodison Park since 2001 to honour the Toffees greatest goalscorer.

Dean scored a total of 383 goals for Everton between 1927 and 1935, including a record 60 league goals in a single season.

Dean won two league titles during his time with the club and was also part of the FA Cup-winning team in 1933.

He also had a spell with Sligo Rovers in 1939, playing in the side that finished runners up in the FAI Cup final.
