Jose Mourinho and Chelsea have reached a settlement with former club doctor Eva Carneiro.

She'd claimed constructive dismissal against Chelsea and discrimination by the former blues boss.

In a statement, the club apologised to Carneiro - while Mourinho thanked her for her "excellent and dedicated support".

Before today's settlement was reached she'd turned down a £1.2 million compensation offer.

The row began after Mourinho criticised Carneiro for coming on to the pitch to treat Eden Hazard near the end of the 2-2 Premier League draw with Swansea last August.

Footage showed a furious Mourinho screaming expletives at Carneiro and physio Jon Fearn.

He had admitted to using the term ‘filho da puta’, which means ‘son of a bitch or whore,’ but he strongly denied that it was directed at Carneiro.

The former Blues boss argued that he had used it throughout the match but in a non gender specific manner.

In legal papers submitted to the employment tribunal Mourinho said: ‘Filho da puta is a phrase I often use, all of the players know it.

“There is no sexist connotation in the use of the phrase, it is just like saying “fuck off”.’

The settlement spared the club and the new manager of Manchester United a bitter battle which would undoubtedly been damaging to all parties involved.

The club confirmed that an end has been brought to the dispute with the below statement:

"Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Dr Carneiro which brings her employment tribunal proceedings against the club and Jose Mourinho to an end.

The club regrets the circumstances which led to Dr Carneiro leaving the club and apologises unreservedly to her and her family for the distress caused.

We wish to place on record that in running onto the pitch Dr Carneiro was following both the rules of the game and fulfilling her responsibility to the players as a doctor, putting their safety first.

Dr Carneiro has always put the interests of the club's players first.  Dr Carneiro is a highly competent and professional sports doctor.

She was a valued member of the club’s medical team and we wish her every success in her future career.

Jose Mourinho also thanks Dr Carneiro for the excellent and dedicated support she provided as First Team Doctor and he wishes her a successful career.”
