Tottenham's Eric Dier has been given a four-match ban and fined £40,000 for confronting a fan after an FA Cup game against Norwich.

The 26-year-old climbed into the stand after Spurs lost a fifth-round penalty shootout to the Canaries in March.

Dier, who was unhappy after a fan insulted him with his family in the stand, was eventually held back by stewards.

An FA Commission said that they "found Eric Dier’s actions to be threatening" so the England international has been charged with misconduct by the FA despite the Metropolitan Police deciding not to bring the incident any further after a brief investigation.

A statement said: "The Tottenham player admitted that his actions at the conclusion of a fixture against Norwich City in the FA Cup were improper but denied that they were also threatening.

"An independent regulatory commission subsequently found Eric Dier's actions to be threatening."

Dier has also been warned about his future conduct by the FA and the verdict means he'll miss the North London derby against Arsenal on July 12th as well as the upcoming games against Bournemouth, Newcastle and Leicester.

The England international will only be available for one more match this season, which is on the final day against Crystal Palace.

Dier has been a regular under Jose Mourinho with the Spurs boss using him in central defence rather than midfield.
