Former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan has paid tribute to legendary British driver Stirling Moss, saying that motorsport has lost a "legend and a genius".

Moss' wife Susie confirmed on Sunday that the 90-year-old passed away after a long illness.

The Dubliner paid tribute to Moss whom he described as a warrior.

"Stirling was a legend, he was an unbelievable fighter and not that long ago he was still driving," Jordan said in an interview with Sky Sports News.

"He retired in his eighties. He survived a huge accident in his home where he fell down a lift shaft. He's just a great fighter and a great warrior. That's how I would describe him.

"And how he didn't win a world championship was probably the most unfair aspect of sport that you would ever find."

Moss is regarded as the greatest F1 driver never to win the world championship.

The Londoner won 16 F1 races and in a seven year period between 1955 and 1961 he was F1 championship runner-up on four occasions and third-placed three times.

He lost the 1958 championship after protesting against the disqualification of title rival Mike Hawthorn at the final race of the season.

"Not alone was he brilliant in Formula One and won lots and lots of different races but he was also brilliant in Formula Three and Formula Two," explained Jordan when asked what made Moss such a great driver.

"He was fearless in sports cars in the days of...you know he would jump out of one car and into another. These things don't happen anymore like that.

"And then he used to go off in the winter time and race for Sunbeam in the rally cars.

"The guy was such a huge enthusiast, not just for the sport, for himself and don't forget that he was around when there wasn't a lot of money in the business.

"So he had to keep racing to keep paying the bills and every weekend he would have, not just one race, he could have three.

"I think his enthusiasm was infectious and it [would] give somebody a real belief that they could try to pinpoint Stirling Moss as their legend and their hero and let's try and emulate that if we possibly could.

"Of course no one could, because he was just a legend and a genius."
