Dundalk made history as they became the first side ever to take a point in the group stage of the Europa League.

They came from a goal down to snatch a 1-1 draw away to AZ Alkmaar in group D, Ciaran Kilduff was the hero as he got on the end of a Daryl Horgan free kick in the 89th minute to head home the equaliser.

Dundalk survived a storm in the first half, Alireza Jahanbakhsh had an effort denied by the post in the opening minutes.

Fred Friday had a goal disallowed for offside shortly before the break, Dundalk benefitted from a dubious decision as the Nigerian striker was onside.

Dundalk continued to defend well after the restart but they were eventually undone on the hou mark when Stijn Wuytens got on the end of a long ball from Rens Van Eijden to make it 1-0.

He bravely headed past Gary Rogers, but came off worse for wear as the collision left him out cold.

A comeback looked unlikely after the SSE Airtricity League champions were reduced to 10 men when Stephen O'Donnell received his second yellow.

Ciaran Kilduff netted the equaliser in the 89th minute he headed home a Daryl Horgan free-kick.

The goal has boosted the club’s coffers by €120,000 in prize money.  Next up for Dundalk in Europe is a game against Maccabi Tel Aviv on the 29th of September at the Tallaght Stadium.

They were beaten 4-3 by Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.  Tonny Vilhena got the only goal of the game as Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Feyenoord.
