Derby and QPR players agree to wage deferrals

Players at both Derby County and Queens Park Rangers have agreed to wage deferrals as part of their clubs' respective responses to the coronavirus pandemic.

Derby say, "First team players have voluntarily agreed a substantial deferral that is considerably more than has been reported in the media, while Phillip Cocu and his coaching team, and Chief Executive Officer Stephen Pearce and his staff have also agreed significant deferrals."

Reports in the local media suggested pay would be deferred by between 25 and 50 per cent.

As captain, Wayne Rooney has led the players' discussions with the board.

Derby's statement adds, "Players, coaches and staff have made financial donations to the club’s Stay Safe. Stay Fit. Stay Connected campaign, and non-playing club staff are volunteering their time to operate the food hub set up at Pride Park Stadium and deliver food to where it is most needed across the city."

QPR say their players have agreed to 25 per cent wage deferrals.

Rangers CEO Lee Hoos told the QPR.co.uk, "I would like to publicly thank the players for the way they have worked with us for the best interests of the club.

“It would have been all too easy for them to focus on their own personal circumstances but, in doing so, pose a significant risk to the future of the club."

Hoos added, "They haven’t done that. Through regular dialogue they have sought answers so they fully understand the situation, and the implications of the decisions they make.

“Their collective agreement to take a 25% wage deferral enables us to deal with the short-term challenges.

“There will be more discussions to be had around the medium and long-term, and once again the players are aware of this and open to further conversations as required.”

QPR captain Grant Hall added: “The club have been in regular contact with us, keeping us informed of what challenges they are facing.

“They have been very open with the squad and that has helped us to understand what is needed, and why our support is absolutely critical."
