In recent weeks, Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has been making strides after a shaky beginning to life at Anfield.
But rumours of a Liverpool move for AS Roma's highly rated Brazilian international goalkeeper Allison aren't going away, even if the Italian club are ruling out the prospect.
Ex-Sunderland goalkeeper David Preece joined Nathan and Kevin Kilbane on the Football Show to discuss the state of goalkeeping including the issues for England ahead of the World Cup and touched on why he expects Liverpool to go all out to secure Allison.
"I think when you look at Karius, he's still young. He's 24 year old. We're starting to see the goalkeeper Liverpool thought they were getting. Maybe it's about 18 months late than expected," said Preece.
"I think they thought he'd fit straight in because he'd experienced English football before [at Manchester City] but again he was hit by nerves where it affected his game and not just his decision making but technically as well.
"It's only now he's getting on top of his game again but I'm not so sure. I think at the very top, if Liverpool have any aspirations of winning anything - there's been a lot of talk about Allison, who's been a target, that's the kind of goalkeeper they're going to have to get."
Preece added that we haven't seen Karius perform at a consistent level for a sustained period of time and that "if the chance was there to get Allison, I know for a fact Liverpool will be going all out in the summer to get him."
