Outing GAA Director General Paraic Duffy has dismissed the suggestion that the naming rights to Croke Park would ever be put out to tender.
For almost 130 years the grounds have been used for sport. On September 10th 1891 ‘Butterly’s Field’ as it was known played host to its first GAA Athletics meeting.
The stadium has since grown to become the 4th largest in Europe. Croke Park’s gross profits were up 3% to €42,658,080 in 2017 with an operating profit of €10,874,258.
The naming rights to Lansdowne Road are worth a reported €4 million a year, with a multi year agreement recently resigned at a cost of €40 million.
Despite the potential massive revenue to be made from selling the stadium naming right, Duffy dismissed the notion:
"That’ll never be sold," the Monaghan man said in an interview with RTÉ Sport.
"You wouldn’t want to do that - it’s an iconic stadium and it’s just so special in the heart of the GAA, I could never see that happening. Ever."
