Crystal Palace manager Alan Padrew's misery has been further compounded today with news that Connor Wickham is set for a spell on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old striker suffered a serious knee injury in the 5-4 loss to Swansea.

The Englishman is expected to miss the rest of the season. The loss of Wickham comes at a terrible time for Palace.

The Eagles are separated by just goal difference from the relegation zone following six successive defeats.

In a statement the club confirmed the extent of the injury: "Connor Wickham's injury sustained at the match against Swansea City on Saturday has seen him undergo an MRI scan and it is confirmed he received an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his right knee."

"He will now undergo surgery and his return to action will be confirmed once rehabilitation starts following surgery.

"Everyone at the club wishes Connor a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him back in action as soon as possible."

Palace currently hold the unwanted record of being the worst team in England in 2016.

The London club have managed just five victories and seven draws in 31 Premier Leagues matches.

They’ve lost 19 games and conceded 56 goals, taking just 22 points from a possible 93.

That gives them the worst points-per-game ratio in the top four divisions in England this year.

It currently stands at 0.71 points per match leaving them bottom of the 94-team table of England’s four professional divisions.

Both York City and Dagenham and Redbridge, who were relegated from League Two last season, are ahead of Palace.
