Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo scored as Manchester City moved to the top of the Barclays Premier League with a controversial 2-0 victory in the first Super Sunday encounter at Newcastle. The Bosnian striker set the visitors on their way to a 10th successive win over the Magpies with an early finish and Negredo struck in added time as City extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 15 games. However, the home side were hugely aggrieved to see a 34th-minute Cheick Tiote equaliser ruled out by referee Mike Jones for offside. The Ivory Coast international blasted home from distance, but after speaking to assistant Stephen Child, Jones ruled out the goal - to the fury of Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, who later became involved in an angry touchline spat with opposite number Manuel Pellegrini.
Strikers Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge rekindled their deadly partnership to help Liverpool record their first league victory at Stoke in more than 29 years. However, the 5-3 scoreline by no means tells the whole story as it was a stuttering performance interspersed with moments of predatory brilliance which saw the Reds squander a 2-0 lead after a Ryan Shawcross and neat Suarez finish had seen them making a blistering start. Stoke hit back through former Reds Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam before Steven Gerrard converted a penalty to restore the away side's lead. Another from Suarez, taking his tally to 22 in 16 league games, made it 4-2 before Jonathan Walters gave the home fans hope with five minutes to play. But Sturridge came off the bench and rounded off the win with his 12th of the season on his first appearance since November 23 because of an ankle sprain.
