Carrick has already overseen United's 2-0 win at Villarreal in the Champions League and 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League, a game Cristiano Ronaldo started on the bench.
Former United midfielder Carrick will focus on preparing the team for Thursday night's clash with Arsenal, who are five points better off than United in the league.
It remains to be seen if Rangnick will be cleared to take charge in time for Sunday's game against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
Carrick will remain on the coaching team along with Kieran McKenna and Mike Phelan when the German takes over.
