A Brighton & Hove Albion player has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

The alleged incident took place at The Arch nightclub in Brighton in the small hours of Wednesday morning.

Brighton have confirmed that one of their players was one of two men arrested by Sussex Police.

A brief statement read, "Brighton and Hove Albion are aware that one of its players is assisting police with the investigation of an alleged offence.

"The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment at this time.”

The Premier League club is home to Republic of Ireland internationals Aaron Connolly and Shane Duffy, both of whom are with Stephen Kenny's squad ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier away to Azerbaijan.

It's reported the player involved - who cannot be named for legal reasons - was taken away from the nightclub in handcuffs and remanded in custody for questioning at a local police station.

A Sussex Police statement said, “Two men have been arrested after a woman reported being sexually assaulted at a venue in Brighton, in the early hours of Wednesday.

"A man in his forties and a man in his twenties, both from Brighton, were arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and remain in police custody at this time.”
