World number seven Bianca Andreescu has confirmed that she's going to skip the French Open tennis later this month and won't play again until 2021.

The Canadian has been recovering from a left knee injury suffered at the World Tour finals at the end of last year and was unable to defend her US Open crown at Flushing Meadows earlier this month.

Andreescu says her focus is now on being fit for the start of the 2021 campaign and she'll be taking the rest of this year off.

"I have come to the difficult decision to skip the clay court swing this year and will be taking the remainder of the season off to focus on my health and training," the 20-year-old confirmed in a statement.

"As hard as it was to come to this conclusion, I have so much to look forward to in 2021, including the Olympics. I want to use this time to focus on my game so I can come back stronger and better than ever."

World number one Ashleigh Barty and US Open champion Naomi Osaka are among the other high-profile players set to miss the French Open, which gets underway in Paris this Sunday.
