Simon Harris has been elected as Ireland's 16th - and youngest - Taoiseach.

He was voted in in the Dáil this afternoon, receiving the backing of 88 TDs, with 69 voting against.

The 37 year old Wicklow TD has since travelled to Áras an Uachtaráin with his wife, children, parents, siblings and members of his extended family.

There, he officially took up the role upon receiving his seal of office from President Michael D. Higgins.

In his first speech as Taoiseach, Simon Harris pledged to be a leader for all;
"No matter your political persuasion, I will work with you and for you, and for the country that I know we all love."

He now turns his attention to the make-up of his Cabinet, with a number of ministerial positions to be allocated following Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney's resignations.
The new-look Cabinet will be unveiled later this evening.
