Retailers may introduce temperature checks for staff and shoppers when they're allowed to reopen.
According to The Irish Times, they're also considering banning price promotions to prevent a rush of customers.
Retail Excellence says shops should also consider barring the use of trolleys and insist on card payments for a period.
Professor Anthony Staines, from DCU's school of nursing, says temperature checks might not be a very effective measure in shops.
"It can give you a false sense of security if you haven't got a temperature. The evidence for travellers is that there's no point measuring temperatures but it can send a message to everybody that you take this seriously."
He went on to point out that; "There's a lots of reasons why people have temperatures, the vast majority of people with a temperature this morning do not have Covid-19."
