Four statues that were removed from outside the Shelbourne Hotel are to be reinstalled.

The owners of the famous Dublin landmark controversially took the life-size bronze sculptures away in July citing the Black Lives Matter movement.

However it's since been confirmed by an art historian that the women are not depictions of slaves.

The Irish Times reports the statues are to be reinstated after being cleaned and restored.

However Dr Ebun Joseph, a lecturer and author, believes the statues are of slaves;

"Look at the servitude, the position of servitude, that those black bodies are in in front of a white opulent hotel" she said.

"It came from an era where black bodies were romanticised, where black bodies were used to demonstrate that differentiation between different groups."

Dublin City Council had issued a warning letter to the owners of the hotel after the 153 year-old sculptures were removed, as they are part of a protected structure.

The Shelbourne was given four weeks to respond to the section 152 letter over concerns planning permission was never applied for.
