Sex education in secondary schools is 'outdated' and 'fear based', according to a government report.

The draft report found students are taught little or nothing about consent, gay relationships or a healthy sex life.

The report, commissioned last year, is checking to see if sex education in schools is 'fit for purpose'.

According to the Irish Times, a leaked draft of the document says that the current sex education curriculum is not.

It describes it as "outdated" and "fear based" and points out that it involves lessons on abstinence.

Noeleen Blackwell from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre said:

"People are leaving secondary school and going into young adulthood without the proper understanding of how they can deal with their emotions and how they can deal with their relationships".

Relationships and Sexuality Education was first introduced in Irish schools up to third year in 1995.

The lessons have not been updated since.

Sex ed classes are compulsory in primary schools, but inconsistent across many secondary schools.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment will discuss the draft report, before issuing recommendations to the Department of Education.
