A segregated cycle route from Blackrock to the Forty Foot in Sandycove is to be introduced.
The temporary measure is part of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown county council's new "Coastal Mobility Interventions" plan.
It will mean the reallocation of road space, with a one-way system for cars on Seapoint Avenue, Queen's Road, Windsor Terrace and Marine Parade.
There will be a 0.9 km section (Coal Quay Bridge to Queen’s Road) where cyclists will be able to use low-trafficked roads in Dún Laoghaire Harbour and then re-enter a segregated 2-way cycle route near to the Lexicon Library on Queen’s Road.
Speaking about the announcement, An Cathaoirleach of dlr Una Power said;
"This is a very exciting initiative to improve walking and cycling infrastructure along one of our coastal routes. Over the last few months we have seen how important our public realm is to us and I’m really hopeful that this will be a great way of making it better for everybody of all ages and all abilities to access our county."
Works are expected to start on the 3.6 kilometre route early next month and will take three to four weeks to complete.
Other measures
Meanwhile the council also plans to close a section of Queen’s Road between the Lexicon Library and Park Road junction temporarily at weekends.
It will facilitate the relocation of the dlr CoCo Markets which is usually held in Peoples Park but is currently closed due to Covid-19 physical distancing restrictions.
While a one-way traffic system for cars has been introduced in Blackrock Village.
