Salesforce is planning to let 200 of its staff at its Dublin office go as part of global layoffs.
The technology firm is the latest company in the tech sector to announce widespread job cuts.
It employs over 2,000 people in Ireland and adds to the growing list of technology multinationals with operations in Ireland to announce reductions in their workforces.
Adrian Weckler, Technology Editor with the Irish Independent, says "what started out as a single transferable explanation from the CEO's of these companies that they hired too many people during the pandemic, has now become a trend and a fashion, to the extent that a lot of big tech companies feel that they have to now let 5% of their staff go."
Earlier this week, Hubspot, which has a large Dublin office, announced that it would be cutting 500 jobs from its global workforce, while the likes of Google, Meta and Microsoft also announcing layoffs.
Adrian Weckler adds that a number of external factors are playing into the recent spate of job cuts being announced.
"It does depend on macro-economic factors, like inflation, interest rates, the war in Ukraine, and the energy crisis, but I don't that anybody believes that the services that some of these core companies provide, from Google, or Meta, or Microsoft, are going to go away."
