A retired senior member of the Gardaí has been arrested during a drugs seizure in Dublin.
The 61 year-old man was detained yesterday as part of an operation which saw five premises searched and €600,000 worth of cannabis herb seized.
Conor Gallagher, Crime Correspondent with the Irish Times, says €47,000 in cash was also recovered by Gardaí;
"That was kind of incidental to the main focus of the investigation which was establishing if Gardaí or retired Gardaí were aiding in the operation of a significant crime gang in North Dublin by passing them on information."
Gardaí say the man was arrested on suspicion of involvement in offences contrary to the provisions of section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2006, relating to alleged enhancing the ability of a criminal organisation to commit or facilitate a serious offence.
He is currently detained at Irishtown Garda Station under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.
