A new 20 cent levy on disposable coffee cups is sending the wrong message on sustainability.
That's according to Retail Excellence which wants the Government to re-think the planned move.
It says that putting a charge on the cups is putting more pressure on both retailers and consumers who are already grappling with rising prices.
Managing Director Duncan Graham says it will mean more retailers will turn to plastic;
"The levy that's being proposed would mean at least 20 cents being placed on a coffee cup and the alternative is that we move away from paper cups and we move to plastic cup and that will clearly end up with more plastic being put into the landfill in the long run."
He says the government's approach should be recycling more products instead.
