The reopening of the gates of the Phoenix Park will not go ahead as planned on Monday.

The Irish Times reports the move has been pushed back to June 29th after consultation between Gardaí and the Office of Public Works, which is in charge of the green space.

Other than the Castleknock and Parkgate Street entrances, the gates to the Phoenix Park have been closed to traffic since March as part of Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Meanwhile the OPW has confirmed more than 500 cyclists an hour are using new cycle lanes in the park each afternoon.

Parking was banned on Chesterfield Avenue with the hard shoulder converted to tracks for cyclists as part of Covid-19 measures.

It follows a response from the OPW to calls for through traffic to be banned from the park from Green Party MEP Ciarán Cuffe.

An online petition for a trial of the initiative has been signed by more than 7,000 people.
