Residents in Clondalkin have protested outside a local convent over plans to build a nursing home there.

They say it will add to congestion in the village and block the 162 year-old building.

The plan includes building a 4 storey, 155 bed nursing home on the grounds of the Presentation Convent.

If granted by An Bord Pleanala, the development would also include space for a retirement home for nuns.

The 'Save Clondalkin Convent Campaign' argues the plan would lead to the loss of scenic grounds, that includes a children's playground, and increased traffic congestion in the area.

The group also believes the development would impact on the privacy of the nearby school and neighbours.

Spokesperson for the campaign group, Monica McGill, says this latest protest is taking place because the concerns of locals still aren't being heard:

"We did write to them and they said, the local nuns, and they said the matter was out of their hands and then we contacted headquarters and they said that they would consider talking to us once the decision of An Bord Pleanala is known"

She went on to say that "there isn't any need for all this unsettling idea and feeling in the village".

An Bord Pleanala is due to make a decision on December 13th.
