Pressure is mounting on the government to end Covid restrictions sooner than the end of the month.

Backbenchers and members of the opposition are calling on the government to act quickly on any new NPHET advice which is expected tomorrow.

The Tanaiste told a meeting of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party the waning severity of the Omicron variant combined with high levels of immunity in the population mean restrictions should be eased quickly over the coming weeks.

Leo Varadkar told said he wanted a deadline of March 31st for the removal of almost all Covid restrictions.

He noted however some measures will likely stay into the summer, such as covid passes for international travel and mask-wearing.

It's less than half the total from 10 days ago when a record of 26,000 cases were reported.

979 Covid patients are in hospital, down 27 on the previous day. While the ICU figure is down four, to 93.
