A potentially explosive device, used in military operations, has been recovered in Carlow.
The army bomb disposal team was called to a home in Hacketstown at 10pm last night resulting in the area being cordoned off and homes evacuated.
The device was not viable and was safely removed.
It followed an appeal around the ordnance, which is used to light up an area during night-time operations, which had gone missing after being spotted by a member of the public on a walking trail at Lugnaquilla in the Wicklow mountains.
The 12" round was taken from the 'Range Danger Area' at the Glen of Imaal prompting an urgent appeal by gardaí. They had warned anyone who came across the device not to move it and to contact gardaí as soon as possible.
