An Post says it could permanently move its HQ from the GPO in Dublin.

Staff have been told the building is in need of a major refurbishment which could take a number of years to complete.

According to the Irish Daily Mail, workers have been told a decision is to be made by the end of the year, with the HQ relocating on a temporary or possibly permanent basis.

Extensive repairs are needed at the famous building including heating, wiring and plumbing. While an post's 50 year lease is due to expire in 2034.

In an email to staff, An Post CEO David McRedmond said the current office space was not a healthy or appropriate work environment.

He went on to say the new fit-for-purpose headquarters would be in central Dublin, cost permitting.

However the plans will not affect the post office and Witness History Museum which are to continue to operate at the GPO.

The iconic building served as the headquarters for the leaders of the Easter Rising in 1916.
