A samurai sword and a meat cleaver are among the weapons which may have been used during an attack on a woman in Dublin yesterday.

The 57 year-old, named locally as Jean Eagers, was discovered with series injuries at around 11.30am following the assault at her home in Willow Wood Grove in Hartstown.

She was treated at the scene by emergency services but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 60-year-old man was arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. He is being held at Blanchardstown Garda Station.

A post mortem is due to be carried out on the woman's body this morning by the Deputy State Pathologist Dr Kathleen Han.

Conor Feehan, reporter with Independent News and Media, says Gardaí had to force their way in;

"When Gardaí arrived at this particular house there was a stand-off, they wanted to get into the house but a man inside the house wouldn't let them in and Gardaí had to force their way into the house where upon they discovered the severely injured lady."

An incident room has been set up at Blanchardstown Garda station.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 01 666 7000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
