A plan to modernise Trinity College in Dublin will open up the campus with new pedestrian entrances.
As part of the plans, the college will expand with the development of a 1 billion euro campus on Grand Canal Quay and a new Business School on Pearse Street. 250 student rooms will be developed on Printing House Square.
Professor Veronica Campbell, Trinity's bursar, told The Irish Times she hopes the project will make the college feel more accessible and encourage more people to venture inside the grounds.
Speaking to the paper she said: 'I’ve spoken to people who’ve lived and worked in the capital their whole lives. Often, their first time in Trinity may not occur until they are in their 40s or 50s. We have two million visitors a year who enjoy the campus or sit out with their sandwiches in the summer. We want our university to be a place that people walk around. It’s a balancing act we need to strike, due to security, litter and so on.'
