Plans to construct two cycling lanes through Deansgrange Cemetery in South Dublin have been formally dropped, following over two years of controversy.
Some families objected to a cycleway going though the cemetery where their loved ones are laid to rest. A Facebook group 'Protect Deansgrange Cemetery' was set up in protest with around 900 members.
The cycleway is now being proposed for outside the cemetery, instead of through it and details of that will have to be ironed out including removing some parking spaces.
1,006 submissions were made in total against the cycle lanes through the cemetery. Around 700 of these were general objections, 100 were about the wall and 200 were in favour of the cyclising scheme.
Cllr Melisa Halpin says they listened to concerns from hundreds of locals.
''I think the hurt and grief that was caused by the proposal was heard loud and clear. I want to commend all the people who put in proposals on the issues because it was heard and it was taken seriously.''
