A planned new law to set a minimum passing distance for cars overtaking cyclists has been abandoned.

Under the proposal drivers were to leave a distance of at least 1 metre when passing a cyclist on the road.

However the Minister for Transport Shane Ross has confirmed to the Irish Times it will not go ahead due to legal concerns about how the distance would be measured.

The new Road traffic Bill will now make dangerous overtaking of a cyclist an offence.
