Plans for a bus service for the Phoenix Park and Dublin Zoo have been delayed once again.

Last year, commuters were promised a bus service that would run between Heuston Station and Cabra via the Phoenix Park.

However, it's been revealed that the historic Cabra gates are actually too narrow to fit a standard bus.

Initial trials had been carried out while the gates had been removed for refurbishments.

Park officials are refusing to replace the gates-which are considered a 'protected landmark'.

This has left the National Transport Authority with no option but to search for an alternative solution.

The NTA has said it has no narrow buses in its fleet. and the few models on the market are only single decker with limited seating.

Commenting on the situation, Green Party Councillor Michael Pidgeon believes there's only one logical solution:

"It's a really really frustrating delay, and I think they should just widen the gates. They're beautiful gates, they're rightly protected and listed. But they would be equally beautiful if they were moved off a smidge, to have that extra metre or so clearance".

He went on to say:

" Years ago we widened the park gates to allow car access, it seems to be an example of fairly mangled priorities if we don't do the same for buses".
