The Taoiseach says the country remains on course to have 4 million people vaccinated against Covid-19 by September.

Pfizer has confirmed it's temporarily reducing production of its vaccine - which will affect shipments later this month.

The company says it's scaling up the manufacturing facilities, to deliver more doses than originally planned this year.

It says it expects a 'significant increase' in the levels delivered through late February into March.

Meanwhile, the gap between the two doses is being increased from 21 to 28 days so more people can get the initial protection.

Speaking at an IIEA webinar, Taoiseach Michael Martin says the rollout is being ramped up:

"We have the capacity to achieve that and I'm looking to mid summer for significant numbers of our people having been vaccinated.

"The Astra Zenica vaccine is the next crucial one, and we're awaiting authorisation, towards the end of this month, on that."

That in itself would be a significant game changer in terms of ramping up the vaccination of our people."

"That's not something that's under our control."

Ireland is to receive doses of the Pfizer Bio-N-Tech vaccine as part of an deal struck by the European Union.

Speaking this afternoon, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar spoke about the manufacturing slow down:

"That's not something that's under our control."

"So we're in a position where we can make sure, as soon as we get a delivery of the vaccine, that it's in the arms of people and patients within days."

More than 77,000 people have been vaccinated nationally against COVID-19 as of Wednesday, with plans to rollout the Moderna vaccine within days.

Three mass Covid vaccination centres will be in operation from tomorrow in Dublin, Galway and Portloaise.

They will be used to vaccinate GP teams using the first supply of the Moderna vaccine.

Latest figures show there are 184 people with Covid-19 being treated in intensive care, while last night there were over 100 people on ventilators.

1,846 people with the virus are being treated in Irish hospitals this morning.

In the past 24 hours there have been 133 admissions and 105 discharges associated with Covid-19.
