More than half of women in Ireland would not use public transport at night over safety concerns.

Just under one-fifth of women nationally reported feeling uncomfortable on public transport, while in Dublin more than a quarter of women reported being verbally harassed or made to feel uncomfortable.

Sexual harassment, assaults and verbal abuse are just some of the reasons women in Ireland are afraid to use public transport.

A report by Transport Infrastructure Ireland found one in three public transport users have seen someone being harassed while using certain services.

Risk

Chief Executive of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, Noeline Blackwell says people need to understand the effect their actions can have: "It seems to somebody to be funny, smart or blokeish to harass somebody sitting on their own – asking them for a kiss or sitting in beside them when there are other seats, instead of recognising that a man may very well know that he does not intend any harm out of that but the woman approached does not know that because there is an extra risk for that woman.

"So there needs to be a mindset change to recognise that actually women are more vulnerable simply because they are women."
