8,238 people were registered as homeless in February, according to the Department of Housing.

Its latest figures show 2,264 children required emergency accommodation last month.

There were 5,889 people without a home in Dublin in February, which is the lowest level seen since 2017.

Across the country, 56 per cent of people who accessed emergency accommodation in February were between the ages of 25 and 44.

Single People

The Simon Community says the drop is driven by the ongoing decrease in family homelessness, which has fallen by 38% in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, 3,046 single people were recorded in Dublin emergency accommodation in February 2021, a 7.6% increase on February 2020.

Dublin Simon Community CEO Sam McGuinness says: Family homelessness is falling, rough sleeping is falling, but the number of single people in emergency accommodation remains frustratingly high. The problem lies in a lack of viable pathways to housing from emergency accommodation for this extremely vulnerable singles category who are spending longer periods now in emergency accommodation."
