International travel is allowed from today for the first time in 16 months, as Ireland rolls-out the EU Digital Covid Certificate.

People can travel without quarantine within Europe if they are fully vaccinated, have recently recovered from covid or have a negative PCR test in the past 72 hours.

More than 22,000 people are expected to pass through Dublin Airport today.

Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair have ramped up their schedules.

Spokesperson for the Dublin Airport Authority, Siobhan O'Donnell, said they've been waiting a long time for this day.

"It is a hugely exciting and quite an emotional day, particularly for all my colleagues because we are going to see the reopening of non-essential international travel.

"We have had an operational readiness team meetings over the past number of months comprising various different departments to make sure everything runs smoothly at the airport."

Meanwhile Chief Operating Officer with Aer Lingus, Peter O’Neill, said anyone heading to the airport today should leave plenty of time for their journey.

"What we are recommending is at least two hours before for European flights and three hours for transatlantic, and that should give more than enough time to get through the airport."
