A woman, who was found not guilty of the murder of her young child by reason of insanity on Wednesday, can't be committed to the Central Mental Hospital.

She has now been released on bail because the facility in Dundrum is full.

Two forensic psychiatrists agreed that the woman was suffering from a mental disorder when she killed her toddler last year. The woman suffocated her three-year-old daughter with a pillow in their living room.

Following her arrest, she told Gardaí she had been thinking about it for a few days beforehand.

She told psychiatrists she did it because she felt she couldn't give her the life she deserved due to what one medical expert described as an “unrealistic and pessimistic view” about her child’s prospects.

The court heard she was awaiting the results of a psychological assessment on her daughter in the wake of concerns that she had autism.

Fianna Fáil's mental health spokesperson, James Browne, says it's an appalling situation;

"The government has been well aware of the serious issues in the central mental hospital, there are delays of up to two years for people to get the care that they need and this is a serious public health concern."
