An enthusiastic football fan now won't be fined for running on to the pitch after the Ireland Portugal game.

The nation watched as 11 year old Addison Whelan from Dublin met her hero Cristiano Ronaldo.

The star gave her the shirt he wore during the world cup qualifier.

Addison was facing a €3,000 fine, but the FAI has this evening confirmed she won't be facing any fine.

FAI Media & Football Relations Director Cathal Dervan says: "We want to reassure Addison that of course she will not face any fine for running onto the pitch and asking for Ronaldo’s jersey."On a serious note we would remind fans at all games that fines are liable to be levied by UEFA in certain instances for entering the field of play, particularly when the game is ongoing and we urge all fans to respect this very sensible rule."

Jersey

Earlier, she said it was "definitely" worth running onto the pitch to meet Cristiano Ronaldo, despite facing a "big fine" for invading the pitch.

Despite the stewards quickly intervening, the Portugal star gave Addison a hug and handed her his jersey.

She says the experience was worth it: "When they caught me, I was just screaming his name. Ronaldo came over and told them to go away.

"I was like ‘oh my god, can I have your jersey please? I’m a huge fan’.

"He was like ‘I appreciate that’. When he took off his jersey… I was so shocked."

The fifth-class student plays U13s for Shelbourne, and says she’s now planning to frame the jersey, but she won't be washing it beforehand.
