Welfare recipients are to be allowed to earn €14,000 a year for renting a room in their homes without it affecting their payments.
The move, that is due to be announced by Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys, is aimed at increasing the supply of rooms to rent for both domestic tenants and Ukrainian refugees.
It will mean that those on welfare who own their own homes, will be able to charge up to €14,000 per annum to rent a room, and the income will be disregarded when it comes to means-tested social welfare payments.
The Irish Times reports that the Government is also set to amend the guidelines for the living alone allowance so that those who do provide accommodation also won't loose the payment.
