Another eleven counties have a yellow rain alert in place. They include Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan.
Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly and Tipperary are also affected.
Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather says the stormy conditions were already being felt last night;
"There was some intense thunderstorm activity last night with a lot of lightning strikes detected and also some very heavy thundery downpours. The rainfall was pretty localised but it certainly did fall very heavily and quickly in parts of the south."
